The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has denied media claims that a soldier named Private Asare Boateng was detained for allegedly stealing $23,000 from a civilian.

The suspect is a fake, according to GAF.

According to a statement, he is not a soldier, a member of the Signal Regiment or a civilian member of the GAF.

In support of this, the statement stated that Asare Boateng was apprehended by the Military Police in Takoradi on Friday, September 16, 2022. Boateng had been accused of impersonating a soldier and extorting money from gullible civilians at Elmina in the Central Region.

Asare Boateng admitted to using extortion and impersonation during the hearing.

He was later handed over by the Military Police to the Kwasimintim Police Station in Takoradi for legal action.

Contrary to media claims, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) wishes to emphasize that the suspect (Asare Boateng) is not a soldier and is not connected to any unit of the Ghana Armed Forces and should not be treated as such.

“In the same vein, GAF wishes to appeal to the media to make use of its open door policy and seek clarification on such matters to prevent the publication of false reports that bring GAF into disrepute.

In order for the country to have a secure environment for socioeconomic development, the statement added: “GAF wishes to assure the general public that it will continuously work with all stakeholders to eliminate criminal elements from society, including any uniformed personnel who engage in an illegal activity.”
